SOUND
There are three types of sound that are used in media and they are:
DIEGETIC SOUND
NON-DIEGETIC SOUND
SOUND AMBIGUITY
DIEGETIC SOUND
Diegetic Sound in Media is the sound which the characters can hear playing along with the viewer, this is unlike the other two types of sound which will be mentioned later on in the post. Sounds such as music playing can be a form of diegetic sound. However this is only as long as we the viewer realise that the sound which is in the film the character can also hear. So for example if the character in the movie turned on the CD player, we understand that the character can hear the music playing just like us. Another example of diegetic sound could be the voices of other characterising the film. Such as if two people are having a conversation. We know that the characters can hear the conversation which is going on just like we the viewer can hear what is going on. The last example of diegetic sound which I will explain about would be, if somebody dropped a book in the film and the character heard it and we heard it. That would be a form of diegetic sound. Diegetic Sound does not always have to happen so the viewer and character witness it happen. It could also be off of the screen, so to say if a person dropped a book on screen in front of the character and they heard the collision from the book and the floor it would still be a form of diegetic sound and if the drop of the book happened from inside a classroom so to say and we did not actually see the collision happen it would still be a form of diegetic sound, as long as we could hear the impact. This form of sound can also be called ‘real sound’. This is because, it is real sound for the characters in the movie and it is also real sound for the people who are watching the movie because, both parties can hear the sound.
We will use this form of sound in our film.
NON-DIEGETIC SOUND
Non-diegetic sound can only be heard by the audience and is added sound used to enhance the atmosphere, purely for the audience's benefit. Therefore, the characters in the media will not respond to the the sounds for example, sound effects when a person is punched or a theme tune used in Star Wars which can be seen to be elevating. Non-diegetic can either help to increase tension or lighten the mood, this also allows the audience to anticipate what will happen next in a scene - whether or not it will be tense. This type of sound helps when it is used in the opening of films because, it tells us what type of film it would be, if Pop music is used it can be assumed that the film would be about teens by stereotyping.
SOUND AMBIGUITY
This sound is the third sound that is used in media.
If Sound Ambiguity is used during the film there will be a time when there is music playing for example in the film, "10 things I hate About You", in the beginning there is a song playing and at first it seems like none of the characters can hear it but then later on when we see the girls in the car, they are dancing to the song that was playing in the background from their car. So what Sound ambiguity is, is when the viewers are confused between Diegetic sound and Non-Diegetic sound.
During the Opening of the film which we make will include this sound technique also.
