Psychological Thrillers focus on mentally and emotionally scaring the protagonist rather than inflicting physical harm. Many Psychological Thrillers look at distorting a person's identity or playing mental games with the protagonist which creates great confusion for the protagonist as well as the audience.

A good example of a psychological thriller is Side Effectts as the protagonist's encounters an number of mental and emotionally trying tests. The antagonists in the film aim to to inflict psychological damage more than physical damage by convincing Emily Taylor that she has relapsed so severely that she killed her husband. Through a series of events she begins to believe that she is truly capable to have committed such an act when in actual fact she was given medication to act in that way. With the film concentrating on psychological health it causes the film to me more compelling as a psychological thriller.
